Laundry mishaps

Yellowing

Yellowing is a yellowing stain, so treat it before it sets.

  1. Try this first

A short soak with a bleach alternative

In a bucket or sink, mix a liquid laundry detergent made with a bleach alternative into warm water, following the label for how much to use per gallon. Soak the garment up to 5 minutes, weighed down with a white towel. Then wash it with the same detergent at the hottest setting the care label allows and unload it right away.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  2. Then try

Chlorine bleach, for colorfast cotton and linen whites

For white cotton, linen and some synthetics that can take it, wash with chlorine bleach, following the directions on the container.

Check the care label. Never use chlorine bleach on silk, wool or spandex, or on fabrics that are not colorfast.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
