Cough syrup and iodine

Two common medicine-cabinet stains, two different treatments.

  1. Try this first

Cough syrup: vinegar soak, then alcohol

Soak for 15 minutes in 1 quart warm water with 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish detergent and 1 tablespoon white vinegar. Rinse with water. Sponge with rubbing alcohol and wash. If a stain stays, soak 30 minutes in 1 quart warm water with 1 tablespoon oxygen bleach, then treat with a pre-wash stain remover and wash.

Rubbing alcohol can take dye out of fabric. Test a hidden spot first.

  2. Then try

    Iodine: rinse from the back

Rinse from the back of the stain with cool water. On white fabric, you can use a color remover, following the directions on the package, then rinse and launder.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
