Red wine on a sofa or chair

Check the cleaning code on the tag first: W means water is fine, S means solvent only.

  1. Try this first

Blot, then salt or baking soda

Blot up as much as you can. Cover the spot with salt or baking soda to pull the wine out, wait 10 minutes and brush it away.

Look for the cleaning code tag under a cushion. If it says S or X, use no water: call a cleaner.

  2. Then try

Mild soap, on W fabric only

Mix 1 teaspoon of clear dish soap in 1 cup of cool water. Dab it on with a white cloth, blot, then dab with plain water and let it air dry, not in the sun.

Test on a hidden corner first. Blot, never rub, and do not soak: wet padding and backing can mold.
