Start with the gentle ways and work your way down the list.

  1. Try this first

Shaving cream, vodka or hair spray

Try one of these first. Blot the stain (a white washcloth works well, so you can see how much of the stain is lifting) and launder as usual.

  2. Then try

    Glycerin, alcohol or club soda

If those do not work well enough, blot with glycerin, rubbing alcohol, club soda or denatured alcohol, then apply Dawn dish liquid and launder as usual.

  3. Then try

    Carbona stain remover

Lastly, try Carbona stain remover products.

  4. Then try

    Rubbing alcohol on paper towels

Put the stain face down on a few layers of paper towel. Dampen another towel with 70 to 90 percent rubbing alcohol and dab the stain again and again, checking the paper underneath for color. Keep going until the stain is gone. Long-lasting lipstick takes more effort.

Rubbing alcohol can take dye out of fabric. Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
