Laundry mishaps

Scorch marks

A light scorch can come out. A severe scorch cannot be removed.

  1. Try this first

    3% hydrogen peroxide

For a light scorch, wet the mark with 3% hydrogen peroxide, let it stand several minutes and keep it moist. For a heavy mark, cover it with a cloth dampened with 3% peroxide, then a dry cloth, and press with an iron as hot as the fabric safely allows. Rinse well and launder.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  2. Then try

    Detergent in hot water

Launder with laundry detergent in hot water, adding chlorine bleach if the fabric can take it. If not, soak in an oxygen bleach and hot water, then launder.

  3. Then try

Salt and lemon juice in the sun

Sprinkle salt on the mark, wet it with lemon juice and spread the item in the sun to dry. Then launder.

  4. Then try

    A hot wash with bleach

Launder with chlorine bleach if the fabric allows it. Otherwise soak in oxygen bleach and hot water, then launder.

Badly scorched fabric may be permanently damaged. Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.
