Nail polish

Test on a scrap of cotton first: stain it on purpose and try the ways on that before the real garment.

  1. Try this first

    Off bug spray (aerosol)

Place a cloth underneath the stain to blot anything that might bleed through. Spray the bug spray onto the stained area until it is saturated, then rub with a cloth or toothbrush. Repeat as the stain lifts and then launder as usual.

  2. Then try

    Hairspray

If there is still a bit of stain, do not put the garment in the dryer. Spray hairspray onto the stained area and launder as usual again.

  3. Then try

    Pure acetone

Try pure acetone, too. Test it on a hidden seam first, and never use it on acetate or triacetate.

  4. Then try

Nail polish remover from the back

Put the stain face down on clean paper towels and apply nail polish remover to the back, replacing the towels often. Repeat until it is gone, then rinse and launder.

Do not use nail polish remover on acetate or triacetate. Some nail polish may never come out. Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
