Stains that may not come out

Some products change the dye or the fiber itself, so no stain remover can undo them.

  1. Try this first

Products that usually leave a permanent mark

These usually leave a permanent mark: acids (such as stomach acid, toilet bowl cleaners, tile grout cleaners, corn and callus removers, foot-care products); acne medicines and skin creams with benzoyl peroxide (also fade or age creams and pet shampoos); strong alkalis such as drain cleaners and oven cleaners; bleaches, pool chemicals and mildew stoppers; some disinfectants and bathroom cleaners; pesticides; plant foods and fertilizers; and old urine stains. Epoxy cement, furniture stain, black walnut and some yellow dyes are on the list too.

Rinse these off the skin and keep them away from clothes, towels and bedding you want to keep.

  2. Then try

    What to do

Treat it right away, since old stains are harder than fresh ones. If it is still there after a few tries, some stains need a professional cleaner, who has skills and products you cannot buy for home use.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
