Underarm stains

Underarm stains is a deodorant stain, so pretreat before washing.

  1. Try this first

    Dish liquid

Rub undiluted hand dish liquid into the stain and launder. If a stain is left, use a bleach that is safe for the fabric, or hydrogen peroxide.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  2. Then try

Liquid detergent or a pre-wash stain remover

Apply liquid detergent and massage it into the fabric, rinse and wash in warm water. Or pretreat with a stain remover and let it stand 5 to 10 minutes before washing.

Some deodorant residues (aluminum or zinc salts) can be impossible to remove completely.

  3. Then try

If the deodorant changed the color

Apply a few drops of ammonia to a new stain, or a few drops of white vinegar to an old stain.

Never mix ammonia and chlorine bleach, and rinse well between one stain remover and the next.

  4. Then try

    White, chalky buildup

Warm the fabric first (a steamer, the steam setting of an iron, or a very hot-water rinse) to loosen the caked deodorant. Rub it gently in circles with a microfiber cloth or damp washcloth, then launder in the warmest water the fabric allows. Next time, give deodorant about 15 minutes to dry before you dress.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  5. Then try

    Light or heavy stains

For a light stain, pretreat with liquid detergent and launder. For a heavy stain, pretreat with a pre-wash stain remover, let it sit 5 to 10 minutes and launder with an oxygen bleach.

Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.
