Laundry mishaps

Rust on clothes

Never use chlorine bleach on rust. It makes the stain more intense.

  1. Try this first

Salt and lemon juice in the sun

Sprinkle salt on the stain, squeeze lemon juice on it and spread the garment out in the sun to dry. Rinse thoroughly. Repeat if needed.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  2. Then try

Cream of tartar (cottons and linens that can be boiled)

Boil the stained item in a solution of 4 teaspoons cream of tartar to 1 pint of water until the stain is gone. Rinse thoroughly.

Only for fabric that can be boiled, generally some cottons and linens.

  3. Then try

    Vinegar, salt and sun

Blot the rust with a cotton ball soaked in white vinegar. While it is still wet, cover it with a thin layer of salt and work it in with a soft brush. Lay the garment in direct sunlight for about 30 minutes, or until the stain fades, then launder.

Do not leave salt on too long: it can leave white spots. Do not use chlorine bleach on rust.

  4. Then try

    A commercial rust remover

Apply a commercial rust remover carefully, following the directions on the package. Rinse well, and repeat if needed.

Read and follow the label. Keep rust remover locked up and away from children.
