Dirty or smelly cutting boards

Wash it hot and soapy, sanitize it, let it dry, and replace it when it is deeply cut.

  1. Try this first

    Wash after every use

Wash the board in hot, soapy water, rinse with clear water and let it air dry or pat it dry with clean paper towels. Solid wood and plastic boards can go in the dishwasher, but laminated wood boards can crack or split. Do not soak a wooden board: it can warp or crack.

  2. Then try

    Sanitize

After washing and rinsing, spread a mix of 1 tablespoon of unscented regular liquid chlorine bleach in 1 gallon of water over the board and let it sit for a minute or more. Rinse with clear water and let it dry. A diluted vinegar solution (about 1 part vinegar to 5 parts water) is another option.

Never mix bleach with vinegar or ammonia.

  3. Then try

    When to replace it

Replace a board that is badly worn or has cracks, crevices, chips, or deep grooves or knife marks. Bacteria can hide in them and they are hard to clean.
