Around the house

Mildew

A shower curtain, tablecloth or beach towel that picked up mildew does not have to go in the trash.

  1. Try this first

    Borax and water

Mix 1 part borax with 4 parts water, scrub the spots with a brush, then launder as usual.

Test a hidden corner first if the fabric is dyed. Wear gloves for scrubbing jobs and keep the powder away from your eyes.

  2. Then try

    Vinegar and water (patio cushions)

Mix a little dish soap and borax in warm water, scrub cushions with a soft brush, rinse with the hose and stand them on their sides to dry in the sun. Spot treat mildew with a mix of vinegar and water.

  3. Then try

A safe bleach in the hottest wash

Launder with a bleach that is safe for the fabric in the hottest water the care label recommends.

Badly mildewed fabric may be permanently damaged. Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.
