Sunscreen

Sunscreen stains are oil stains: treat the oil first, wash warm and keep it out of the dryer until it is gone.

  1. Try this first

Treat it like grease, and do it fast

Sunscreen is oily, so go at it with something that cuts oil. Work a little liquid dish soap or liquid laundry detergent into the spot with your fingers, then leave it 10 to 15 minutes before washing.

  2. Then try

    Wash it warm

Wash as the care label allows, in the warmest water the fabric can take. For lingering yellow or orange marks on whites, chlorine bleach can help. On colors, use an oxygen bleach instead.

Test bleach on a hidden spot. No chlorine bleach on silk, wool or spandex.

  3. Then try

    Check before you dry

Look at the spot while the item is still wet. If you can still see it, treat and wash again. Heat from the dryer sets the stain, and then it may never come out.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
