Pesticides on work clothes

This one is about safety, not looks. Wash these clothes apart from the family laundry.

  1. Try this first

Keep them separate, rinse first, wash small loads

Do not wash pesticide-soiled clothes with the family wash: residues can transfer to other clothes. Pre-rinse by hosing them outdoors, soaking in a separate tub or running a rinse cycle. Then wash only one or two garments at a time, and wash clothes that have the same pesticide together. Wash them hot (about 120 to 140 degrees F) with a heavy-duty liquid detergent, which removes more oily formulations. For a very toxic product, wash at least three times.

Read the pesticide label first for any washing instructions. Do not use bleach: it does not help, and it can react with ammonia fertilizer to make poisonous chlorine gas. Do not wash heavily soiled clothes at a public laundromat.

  2. Then try

    Line dry

Hang the clothes on a line to dry so residues do not build up in the dryer. Run the empty washer through a hot cycle afterward.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
