Mold and mildew on household things

Moisture is what makes mold grow, so dry everything fully. Never leave a wet shower curtain bunched up.

  1. Try this first

    Fabrics and shower curtains

Brush off the mold outdoors, wash with soap and dry in the sun. For a stubborn stain, try lemon juice and salt, an oxygen bleach (1 to 2 tablespoons per pint of water) or chlorine bleach (2 tablespoons per quart of warm water for 5 to 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly in plain water).

Never use chlorine bleach on silk, wool or spandex, and never use it with vinegar, ammonia or any other cleaner. Test for colorfastness first.

  2. Then try

    Hard surfaces (tile, shower walls)

Clean with detergent and water, then dry the surface completely. Household laundry bleach can be used, no stronger than 1 cup per gallon of water.

Ventilate the area, wear gloves and never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners. Fix the moisture problem, or the mold comes back.

  3. Then try

    Upholstery, mattresses and rugs

Brush and vacuum outdoors, throw out the vacuum bag right away and dry the item thoroughly. Lightly sponge with soap suds, or with a mix of 1 cup rubbing alcohol and 1 cup water.

For deep mold, call a professional. Test a hidden spot first.

  4. Then try

    Leather

Wipe with diluted rubbing alcohol, then clean with mild soap or saddle soap.

    Test a hidden spot first.

  5. Then try

    Wood furniture

Dry the wood thoroughly, because mildew keeps growing while the wood holds more than about 20 percent moisture. Check underneath and inside the piece. Mineral spirits will treat the mildewed surface.

Wear rubber gloves. Mineral spirits are flammable: use them in a well-ventilated room, away from flames.
