Floor wax and polish buildup on vinyl and tile

Old wax layers go yellow and cloudy. Strip them, do not add more.

  1. Try this first

    A floor stripper for buildup

Use a floor wax and polish stripper made for your floor, as the label directs and with the room ventilated. Leave it on for the time the label says (often 30 minutes for thick layers), scrub or mop, and rinse well, changing the rinse water often.

Not for hardwood or laminate. Check your floor maker for what is safe, and never mix cleaners.

  2. Then try

    Finish with a vinegar rinse

After stripping, mop with 1/2 cup white vinegar in a gallon of warm water, then rinse with plain water and dry. This neutralizes the stripper so new polish will stick. For a light film, the same mix may be all you need, but vinegar alone does not dissolve wax well.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
