Everyday spills

Gasoline and diesel on clothes

This is a fire hazard first and a stain second.

  1. Try this first

Take it off and air it out first

Take off clothing that is wet with fuel and put it outdoors, in the shade and away from any flame, spark or heat, so the fuel evaporates completely. Do not put it in the washer or dryer while it still smells of fuel.

Never use a dryer. Fuel vapor can ignite. If clothes are soaked through, the safest choice may be to throw them away: ask your garbage service or hazardous-waste center how.

  2. Then try

    Then wash on their own

Once the fuel has evaporated and the smell is gone, wash the clothes alone in a separate load with a heavy-duty detergent, as the care label allows, and air dry. If any smell is left, wash again. Keep the washer and dryer away from open flames.

Hot water can set a stain, so use the water temperature the care label allows.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
