Drinks

Beer

Beer is a drink stain, so blot and rinse with cool water right away.

  1. Try this first

Salt, then cool water or club soda

While the stain is fresh, sprinkle it with table salt to soak up some of the wine. Sponge with cool water or club soda, blot well and let it dry.

  2. Then try

Detergent, then a bleach the fabric allows

Sponge or rinse the stain in cool water. Rub in liquid laundry detergent, or a paste of detergent powder and water, then launder. Use chlorine bleach only if the fabric can take it, and an oxygen bleach if it cannot.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  3. Then try

    Vinegar soak

If a stain is left, soak it for 15 minutes in 1 quart warm water with 1/2 teaspoon detergent and 1 tablespoon white vinegar. Rinse well.

  4. Then try

Rubbing alcohol, as a last try

Still there? Sponge it with rubbing alcohol, rinse thoroughly and launder with a bleach that is safe for the fabric.

Rubbing alcohol can take dye out of fabric. Treat right away and test a hidden spot first.

  5. Then try

    On a carpet

Blot up as much as you can. Pour on club soda, sponge it up, then sponge with cool water and blot. Blot with 1 teaspoon neutral detergent (no bleach) mixed in 1 cup lukewarm water, then with 1/3 cup white vinegar mixed with 2/3 cup water, and repeat the detergent. Sponge with clear water and blot as dry as you can.

Test a hidden spot of the carpet first.

  6. Then try

Cool water, then a pre-wash remover

Sponge with cool water, or soak the garment about 30 minutes in cool water. Pretreat with a pre-wash stain remover, then launder, adding chlorine bleach if the fabric allows it.

Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
