Urine and sweat stains on a mattress or pillow

Blot, never rub, and use an enzyme cleaner. Do not soak the mattress.

  1. Try this first

    Blot, enzyme cleaner, then dry

Soak up as much as you can with clean towels, pressing, not rubbing. Spray an enzyme cleaner on the spot, let it sit about 15 minutes and blot until the cloth comes up dry. Let the mattress dry completely before the sheets go back on.

Do not soak a mattress with water or strong chemicals: the filling stays wet and can mold.

  2. Then try

    Vinegar spray and baking soda

Spray a half and half mix of white vinegar and water lightly on the spot, cover it with a thick layer of baking soda and leave for at least 4 hours. Vacuum it all up.

    Test a hidden spot first.

  3. Then try

    Pillows

For a sweat-yellowed pillow, check the care label. Most can be washed: pretreat the yellow patches with a paste of hydrogen peroxide and dish soap, wash, and dry completely in the dryer on low or in the sun.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
