Baked-on splatters in the microwave

Let the steam and a damp cloth do the work, and skip the scouring.

  1. Try this first

    Cool, unplug and wipe

Let the microwave cool and unplug it. Take out the turntable and roller ring and wash them in warm water with a little mild dish soap. Wipe the roof, walls and floor with a soft cloth wrung out until damp, not dripping, then the door glass, edges and seals, gently. Dry everything and put the parts back before you plug it in.

Do not use scourers, steel wool, bleach or oven cleaner inside. Do not pour water into the base or any openings.

  2. Then try

    Steam to loosen dried food

Put 1 cup of white vinegar and 1 cup of warm water (or a cup of water with a few lemon slices) in a microwave-safe glass container with a wooden spoon or skewer in it, and heat on high for about 5 minutes (up to 10 in a low-power oven). Take it out carefully with an oven mitt and wipe the walls and door: little scrubbing is needed.

Hot water can become superheated and erupt, so stay nearby and handle the container carefully. Check your microwave’s manual, which may rule out steam cleaning. Do not run it empty.
