Baked beans

Baked beans is a sauce stain, so scrape off what you can and rinse from the back.

  1. Try this first

Pre-wash stain remover, then heavy-duty liquid detergent

Treat the stain with a pre-wash spot and stain remover, following the label, then launder with heavy-duty liquid detergent.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  2. Then try

Liquid detergent and an enzyme presoak

Freely apply liquid detergent, work it into the stain, rinse your hands and repeat. Wash with detergent plus a non-chlorine bleach with enzyme presoak. If the stain is still there, soak the item for a day or two, stirring the water now and then, then wash again and let it air dry.

  3. Then try

    On a carpet or couch

Sponge the stain with cool water. Spray a laundry pre-treater such as Spray ‘n Wash or Shout, agitate lightly with a toothbrush or your fingers and blot with a white folded cloth, turning it as it picks up stain. Sponge with cool water to rinse and blot. If a stain is left, sponge with 1 part white vinegar mixed with 1 part water, blot and rinse with clear water.

Do not over-wet a couch: the fabric finish can leave a ring. Test a hidden spot first.

  4. Then try

Step by step: from the back, then detergent

Remove the excess with a spoon or knife without rubbing it in. Run cold water through the back of the stain right away: never rinse from the front, which pushes it deeper. Gently work liquid detergent in with small circles, from the outer edge in. On white or colorfast fabric, apply a mild bleaching agent such as hydrogen peroxide or white vinegar with a sponge (lemon juice works on white), and rinse well. Repeat until the stain is gone, holding it to the light to check. Apply a stain remover for at least 5 minutes, then wash. If it remains, work in more detergent, soak in warm water 30 minutes and wash again.

Do not dab at the stain: that spreads it. Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
