Stains on a porcelain sink or tub

Start with the gentlest scrub: baking soda. Skip steel wool and harsh powders on porcelain.

  1. Try this first

    Baking soda paste

Scrub the stain with a paste of baking soda and water on a soft sponge, leave 10 minutes, then rinse.

No steel wool or scouring powders on porcelain or enamel: they scratch and make stains worse.

  2. Then try

Vinegar or lemon for mineral and rust marks

Lay a paper towel soaked in white vinegar or lemon juice on the mark for 15 to 30 minutes, then scrub gently and rinse. For toilet rings, lower the water first.

Never mix vinegar with bleach or a toilet cleaner that has bleach.

  3. Then try

Hydrogen peroxide for dark or dye stains

Mix a little baking soda with 3 percent hydrogen peroxide into a paste, leave it on for an hour, then scrub and rinse. This also helps with hair dye on a white sink.

Test a hidden spot first on colored fixtures.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
