Rust on garden furniture and tools

Take the loose rust off, then stop new rust with paint or oil.

  1. Try this first

    Scrub the rust off

Brush the rust with a wire brush or steel wool, or rub with a cloth dipped in white vinegar or lemon juice and salt. Rinse and dry fully.

  2. Then try

    Protect it

Prime and paint furniture with a rust-inhibiting paint. Wipe tools dry and rub a little oil on the metal before storing.

Wear gloves and eye protection when wire-brushing. Rust remover products are harsh: follow the label.
