Before you start: quick rules

Food

Ice cream

Milk and sugar: soak it first with an enzyme product. (Chocolate ice cream is under Chocolate.)

  1. Try this first

    Enzyme soak

Pretreat or soak the stain in a product with enzymes for at least 30 minutes, longer if it is old. Launder in the warmest water the fabric can safely handle.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  2. Then try

Pre-wash remover, then dish soap and ammonia

Blot, pretreat with a pre-wash stain remover and launder. If a stain is left, apply a few drops each of dish soap and ammonia, flush out all the ammonia, soak 30 minutes in 1 quart warm water with 1 tablespoon oxygen bleach and wash.

Never mix ammonia and chlorine bleach, and rinse well between one stain remover and the next.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
