Mascara

Mascara is a makeup stain, which is oil and pigment, so treat the oil first.

  1. Try this first

    Water-based makeup

Dampen the stain and rub it with bar soap, or pretreat with heavy-duty liquid laundry detergent or a paste of detergent powder and water. Then launder.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  2. Then try

    Oil-based makeup

Sponge with a waterless hand cleaner, rinse and let it air dry. Apply detergent to the stain and launder. If a stain is left, add a few drops of ammonia to a light-duty liquid detergent solution, apply it, rinse and launder.

Never mix ammonia and chlorine bleach, and rinse well between one stain remover and the next.

  3. Then try

    Sunscreen and suntan lotion

Soak for 15 minutes in 1 quart warm water with 1/2 teaspoon dish detergent and 1 tablespoon white vinegar. Rinse and wash. If it is still there, soak 30 minutes in warm water with an oxygen bleach, treat with a pre-wash stain remover for 1 minute and wash.

  4. Then try

    Bar soap or detergent paste

Pretreat the makeup with a pre-wash stain remover, liquid detergent, a paste of detergent powder and water, or rub it with bar soap. Then launder.

Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.
