Everyday spills

Motor oil and automotive grease

Soak up what you can first, then use the hottest water the fabric allows.

  1. Try this first

    Talcum powder to absorb

Absorb as much of the grease as you can with talcum powder, then brush it off thoroughly.

  2. Then try

Pre-wash stain remover and the hottest water

Treat the stain with a pre-wash spot and stain remover. Launder in the hottest water that is safe for the fabric, with heavy-duty liquid detergent. If the stain is still there, repeat.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  3. Then try

Dish detergent and a few drops of ammonia

Sponge with water. Apply diluted hand dish detergent and a few drops of ammonia. Keep going as long as the stain is still coming out, then flush with water and repeat if needed.

Never mix ammonia and chlorine bleach, and rinse well between one stain remover and the next.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
