Before you start: quick rules

Carpet & upholstery

Food spills on carpet (sauce, chocolate, juice)

Scoop first, then blot with a mild soap solution.

  1. Try this first

    Scoop, blot, soap, rinse

Lift off any solid bits with a spoon. Blot liquid with a white cloth. Dab on 1 teaspoon dish soap in 1 cup cool water, wait 5 minutes, blot, then dab with plain water and blot dry.

Test on a hidden corner first. Blot, never rub, and do not soak: wet padding and backing can mold.

  2. Then try

    Oily or colored stains

For greasy food, sprinkle cornstarch or baking soda, leave 15 minutes and vacuum before using the soap solution. For colored food, a little white vinegar and water dabbed on helps.

Never mix vinegar with bleach or ammonia.
