Sofa or chair: what do W, S, WS and X mean?

Look under a cushion or the seat for a tag. The letter tells you what to clean with, before any stain.

  1. Try this first

Find the tag and read the letter

W means water-based cleaners are fine: dish soap, a little laundry detergent, or a store stain remover. S means use only a water-free solvent or a professional. WS means either kind is safe. X means vacuum or brush only, or call a professional.

No tag? Treat it as S, with no water, until you know.

  2. Then try

    Whatever the letter

Blot, never rub. Test a hidden spot. Use as little liquid as you can, and let the cushion air dry, not in direct sun or with a hair dryer.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
