White rings and cloudy marks on wood furniture

A white ring is moisture in the finish. Start with the gentlest way and work down.

  1. Try this first

Ammonia and water on the whole surface

If the whole top is cloudy, rub it with a damp cloth dipped in 1/2 cup of household ammonia and 1/2 cup of water, and wipe it dry right away. If the color comes back, polish with wax or furniture polish.

Never mix ammonia and chlorine bleach, and rinse well between one stain remover and the next. Wear rubber gloves. Test a hidden spot first.

  2. Then try

    Steel wool and oil

If the color does not return, dip extra-fine (000) steel wool in oil (olive, mineral, lemon or boiled linseed) and rub lightly with the grain. Wipe with a soft cloth and re-wax once the color is back.

Rub very lightly: steel wool can scratch.

  3. Then try

A deep spot: a drop of ammonia

Put a drop or two of ammonia on a damp cloth, rub the spot and dry it at once with a dry cloth. Finish with polish, wax or oil.

If the spots stay, the old finish may have to be stripped and the piece refinished.
