Grease and oil

Cornstarch soaks up grease, and a wet bar of Fels Naptha works on oil-based stains.

  1. Try this first

    Cornstarch

Sprinkle cornstarch onto the garment and let it set for a few hours to absorb the grease. Brush it off. It lifts grease spots from walls, too: rub cornstarch onto the wall with a soft cloth.

  2. Then try

    Fels Naptha

Rub a wet bar on oil-based stains before laundering.

  3. Then try

    Dish soap

Pretreat the spot with dish soap before washing. Oil can leave stains on clothes, carpet and upholstery.

Never leave oil-stained rags balled up, since they can catch fire as they dry. Lay them flat outside to dry.

  4. Then try

Light stains: pretreat and a hot wash

Pretreat with a pre-wash stain remover, liquid detergent or a liquid detergent booster, then launder in the hottest water safe for the fabric.

Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.
