Perfume and cologne

Fragrance stains come out with cool water, a vinegar soak and, if needed, rubbing alcohol.

  1. Try this first

    Cool water and detergent

Sponge or soak the stain in cool water. Apply detergent to the stain, then launder.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  2. Then try

    Vinegar soak, then rubbing alcohol

Soak for 15 minutes in 1 quart warm water with 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish detergent and 1 tablespoon white vinegar. Rinse with water. If the stain stays, sponge it with rubbing alcohol, rinse thoroughly and launder. If the fabric can handle it, add chlorine bleach to the wash.

Rubbing alcohol can take dye out of fabric. Test a hidden spot first.

  3. Then try

    Pre-wash remover or liquid detergent

Pretreat with a pre-wash stain remover or liquid detergent, then launder.

Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.
