Tomato stains on plastic containers

Tomato sauce tints plastic orange. Soap and sun fade it, with a little patience.

  1. Try this first

    Soap, then sunlight

Hand wash the container with a concentrated dish liquid and let it dry completely. Then set it in direct sunlight, such as a sunny windowsill. The sun gradually lightens the stain: it can take hours, or even days, so check it now and then.

Do not scrub hard or use scouring pads: they can etch and scratch plastic. Soaking in dish soap before the dishwasher helps, because the dishwasher alone may leave the tint.

  2. Then try

    Baking soda soak

Scrub the container, then let it sit about 15 minutes in a mix of baking soda, water and dish soap. Scrub again. This helps with odors, too.

  3. Then try

White vinegar, lemon or hydrogen peroxide

Scrub the stain with white vinegar (plain or with dish soap), or with a cut lemon, then wash as usual. For a deep stain, fill the container with hydrogen peroxide and let it soak, then wash.

Test a hidden spot first. Do not mix peroxide with vinegar.
