Spills on marble

Fruit juice and other acids can etch marble if they sit on it, so wipe up fast.

  1. Try this first

    Warm sudsy water first

Wipe up or sponge up the excess right away. Wipe the surface with a cloth dipped in warm sudsy water (about 1/2 teaspoon of liquid detergent in 1 quart of warm water), then wipe with a cloth dipped in clear water and dry.

Test any cleaner in an out-of-the-way spot first.

  2. Then try

A poultice for a stain that stays

Mix a thick paste of powdered laundry detergent, water and hydrogen peroxide. Spread it on the stain, cover it with a damp cloth to slow the drying and leave it until the stain is bleached out. Rinse thoroughly and dry.

Wear rubber gloves with hydrogen peroxide. If the surface is etched, ask a stone professional: etched marble needs repolishing.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
