Food

Poultry

Poultry is a meat or fish stain: protein plus fat, so cool water first.

  1. Try this first

Cool water, then an enzyme soak

Rinse in cool water. Pretreat or soak the stain in a product with enzymes for at least 30 minutes (several hours for an aged stain), or overnight in a laundry pre-soak such as Biz or Axion. Then launder.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label. Enzyme products are not for silk or wool.

  2. Then try

Dish soap and ammonia, then an oxygen bleach (meat-based sauces and soups)

Soak for 15 minutes in 1 quart warm water with 1/2 teaspoon dish detergent and 1 tablespoon ammonia, stirring or blotting now and then. Rinse until every trace of ammonia is gone. Then soak 30 minutes in 1 quart warm water with 1 tablespoon oxygen bleach and wash.

Never mix ammonia and chlorine bleach, and rinse well between one stain remover and the next.

  3. Then try

Fried or greasy: the grease first

For fried chicken, bacon and other fatty foods, work liquid detergent or a pre-wash stain remover into the stain, rinse your hands and repeat, then wash at the highest temperature the care label allows.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
