Any stain

A mystery stain, step by step

Work down this list, gentlest first, and stop when the stain is gone.

  1. Try this first

    Cold water, then detergent

Soak in cold water for about 30 minutes. Then work a little liquid laundry detergent, shampoo or dish liquid into the stain, leave it about 30 minutes and rinse.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  2. Then try

A bleach the fabric can take

Wash with a bleach that is safe for the fabric. Read the care label and follow the directions on the container.

Do not use chlorine bleach on wool, silk or spandex. Do not use metal spoons or metal containers with bleach.

  3. Then try

    An overnight pre-soak

Soak overnight in a laundry pre-soak such as Biz or Axion. It is very good for milk, egg, blood and perspiration. If you have no pre-soak powder, use any laundry detergent. Then wash in the hottest water safe for the fabric: very hot for cotton and linen, hand-hot for synthetics and just warm for woolens.

  4. Then try

    If it is greasy

If washing does not remove a grease stain, let the item dry, sponge the stain with a grease solvent and air the garment to clear any fumes. Save this and the harsher options for last.

Solvents are flammable. Use them in a well-ventilated room, away from flames.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
