Pet and baby messes on carpet

Scrape up the solids first, without pushing the stain deeper.

  1. Try this first

    Dish detergent and lukewarm water

Gently scrape off the solids. Sponge with 1 teaspoon of mild white dish detergent in 1 pint of lukewarm water, then blot with an absorbent pad. Keep sponging and blotting until no more stain lifts.

    Test a hidden spot first.

  2. Then try

    Ammonia, if a stain stays

Sponge with 1 tablespoon of ammonia in 1 cup of warm water and blot until no more stain lifts. Lay a weighted absorbent pad over the damp spot until it stops drawing liquid, then let it air dry well and fluff the pile with your fingers.

Never mix ammonia and chlorine bleach, and rinse well between one stain remover and the next. Ammonia damages silk and wool.
