Blood on carpet and furniture

Use cool water on blood. Hot water can set it.

  1. Try this first

Cool water and mild detergent (carpet)

Mix 1 teaspoon of mild detergent (one with no alkalies or bleach) in 1 cup of cool water. Dab a little on the stain and blot, without pushing the stain deeper. Keep going until no more stain lifts.

    Test a hidden spot first.

  2. Then try

Ammonia, if a stain stays (carpet)

Mix 1 tablespoon of ammonia in 1/2 cup of water. Sponge the stain and blot until no more lifts. Cover with a weighted absorbent pad until it stops drawing liquid, then let it air dry well.

Never mix ammonia and chlorine bleach, and rinse well between one stain remover and the next. Ammonia damages silk and wool.

  3. Then try

On a cotton or linen sofa

If the stain is still wet, sponge or blot with cold water. Mix 1 quart of cool water, 1/2 teaspoon of dish or laundry detergent and 1 tablespoon of ammonia. Blot with a clean white pad, changing it as it picks up stain, then rinse with clear water and blot to remove all the ammonia. Let it dry quickly.

Never mix ammonia and chlorine bleach, and rinse well between one stain remover and the next. Too much water can leave a ring on upholstery.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
