Pet urine on carpet

Blot it, then use an enzyme cleaner. Do not scrub.

  1. Try this first

    Blot, then an enzymatic cleaner

Press paper towels or a clean rag firmly on the fresh spot to soak up the liquid. Scrubbing pushes urine deeper into the backing. Test the cleaner on a hidden spot, then treat the stain and a couple of inches around it, because urine spreads under the surface. Apply an enzymatic pet-urine cleaner generously. Let a light spot sit about 15 minutes; for a heavy one, cover with a damp cloth and leave it 12 to 24 hours. Blot up the moisture, let it dry overnight and vacuum.

Repeat if the stain or smell comes back: that usually means urine reached the padding. Do not use hydrogen peroxide alone without testing, since it can bleach carpet. Never pour vinegar into a carpet cleaning machine.

  2. Then try

Find old spots with a blacklight

Dried urine glows under a blacklight in a dark room. Mark the spots and treat each one the same way.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
