Laundry mishaps

Fabric softener spots

Oily-looking spots after the dryer? Fabric softener can cause them. (Fabric sheets belong in a cold dryer, not on top of wet clothes in a hot one.)

  1. Try this first

    Bar soap, then wash

Rub the spot with a bar of soap, then launder.

  2. Then try

Concentrated detergent and a hot wash

Saturate the spot with concentrated detergent and water, then launder in hot water.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  3. Then try

    Rubbing alcohol

If the spot is still there, sponge it with rubbing alcohol until it lightens. Rinse and launder with detergent in warm water.

Rubbing alcohol can take dye out of fabric. Test a hidden spot first.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
