Mustard

Mustard has a yellow dye in it (turmeric), so treat it at once.

  1. Try this first

Scrape, then a pre-wash stain remover

Scrape off the extra mustard. Sponge with a pre-wash soil and stain remover, then rinse.

  2. Then try

Detergent and a few drops of vinegar

Work light-duty liquid detergent and a few drops of white vinegar into the stain. Rinse well.

  3. Then try

    3% hydrogen peroxide

If the stain is still there, apply 3% hydrogen peroxide, rinse and launder.

Hydrogen peroxide is a bleach and can lighten colors. Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  4. Then try

Cold rinse, then a hot wash with bleach

Rinse under cold water to loosen the stain and pretreat with a pre-wash stain remover. Launder in the hottest water safe for the fabric, adding a bleach, preferably chlorine bleach if the fabric allows it.

Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
