Mud on carpet

Leave wet mud alone. It is far easier to clean once it is dry.

  1. Try this first

Dry, vacuum, then a mild detergent

Let the mud dry completely (a fan aimed at it speeds things up). Vacuum it with a hose attachment, gently scraping stubborn bits from the fibers with a spoon and vacuuming again until it is gone. Mix warm water with laundry detergent (one with a stain remover is ideal), test it on a hidden patch, then dab the stain with a sponge until it fades. Do not rub. Let the carpet dry naturally.

Do not scrub or scrape hard enough to damage the fibers. Do not soak the carpet.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
