Stains on granite and quartz countertops

Wipe spills at once. Use soap and water first, and nothing acidic on stone.

  1. Try this first

    Warm soapy water, then dry

Wipe spills right away with a soft cloth and warm water with a little dish soap, then dry. Most fresh stains come off this way.

  2. Then try

    Baking soda paste, left overnight

For an older stain, spread a paste of baking soda and water over it, cover with plastic wrap, tape the edges and leave overnight. Wipe off the next day and rinse.

Keep vinegar, lemon and other acids off granite and marble: they dull the finish. Test a hidden spot first.

  3. Then try

    Grease or oil: absorb first

Cover an oil stain with cornstarch or baking soda, leave several hours and wipe away. Repeat if it is still dark.

If a stain is deep or on a stone you are unsure about, ask the installer or a stone cleaner.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
