Food

Caramel

Caramel is a sugary stain, so soak it in warm water to dissolve the sugar.

  1. Try this first

    Cool water, then liquid detergent

Sponge the stain promptly with cool water, or soak it in cool water for 30 minutes or more. Work undiluted liquid detergent into the stain and rinse.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  2. Then try

    Vinegar soak, then rubbing alcohol

Soak for 15 minutes in 1 quart warm water with 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish detergent and 1 tablespoon white vinegar. Rinse with water. Sponge with rubbing alcohol and wash. If a stain stays, soak 30 minutes in 1 quart warm water with 1 tablespoon oxygen bleach and wash again.

Rubbing alcohol can take dye out of fabric. Test a hidden spot first.

  3. Then try

Pre-wash stain remover and an oxygen bleach paste

Dampen the stain with a pre-wash spot and stain remover, following the label. Apply a paste of oxygen bleach and water and wash in warm to hot water with heavy-duty detergent.

  4. Then try

    Flush from the back

Remove the excess syrup with a blunt knife. Flush the back of the stain with cool to warm water. Pretreat with a stain remover or liquid detergent, leave it several minutes and rinse well. Wash according to the care label.

Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
