Food

Butter, mayonnaise and cooking oil

Oily food stains come out best with detergent worked in and the hottest wash the fabric allows.

  1. Try this first

Liquid detergent worked in, then the hottest wash

Freely apply liquid detergent or a prewash stain remover, work it into the stained area, rinse your hands and repeat. Machine wash at the highest temperature the care label allows, with 1 cup of detergent.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  2. Then try

Scrape and pretreat (butter, peanut butter)

Scrape off the extra. Pretreat with a spot remover and launder. For butter or margarine, rub detergent into the damp stain and wash in hot water with plenty of detergent and a bleach that is safe for the fabric.

  3. Then try

Waterless hand cleaner (mayonnaise, peanut butter)

Sponge with a waterless hand cleaner and rinse. Let it air dry, apply detergent and launder.

  4. Then try

Dish soap and a few drops of ammonia

If a stain stays, apply a few drops each of dish soap and ammonia and flush until every trace of ammonia is gone. Soak 30 minutes in 1 quart warm water with 1 tablespoon oxygen bleach, rinse and wash.

Never mix ammonia and chlorine bleach, and rinse well between one stain remover and the next.

  5. Then try

Pre-wash remover and the hottest safe wash

Pretreat with a pre-wash stain remover, then launder in the hottest water that is safe for the fabric.

Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.
