Laundry mishaps

Dye transfer (colors that ran)

Re-wash as quickly as you can. Do not put it in the dryer.

  1. Try this first

    Re-wash right away

Apply liquid detergent, work it into the area and repeat. Re-wash the items as quickly as possible and do not dry them.

  2. Then try

Add a bleach or a color remover

Wash with detergent plus 1 cup of non-chlorine bleach. If the fabric is white or colorfast, you can use chlorine bleach or a commercial color remover instead, following the directions on the package.

Check the care label. Chlorine bleach is not for silk, wool, spandex or fabrics that are not colorfast.

  3. Then try

A packaged color remover (white fabrics)

On white fabrics, use a packaged color remover following its label, then launder. If dye remains, launder with chlorine bleach if the fabric allows it. For fabrics that are not colorfast, soak in oxygen bleach and then launder.

Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
