Oil stains on a driveway or garage floor

Soak fresh oil up first. Old oil takes a scrub and some patience.

  1. Try this first

    Absorb

Cover the oil with cat litter, cornstarch or baking soda, grind it in with your shoe, leave several hours or overnight and sweep it up.

Used absorbent is oily waste: ask your trash or hazardous-waste service how to throw it away. Keep oil out of storm drains.

  2. Then try

    Scrub

Pour dish soap on what is left, scrub with a stiff brush and hot water, and rinse with a hose. Repeat for older stains.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
