Winter salt stains on boots and carpet

The white marks are mineral salts. Vinegar and water dissolves them.

  1. Try this first

Vinegar and water on leather boots

Dab the stain with a towel dipped in a mix of 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water (1 to 1 for a bad stain; vinegar alone is too harsh and dries leather out). Wipe, let the boots dry slowly at room temperature stuffed with newspaper, away from heat, then condition the leather.

Test a hidden spot first. Heat can crack leather and flatten suede.

  2. Then try

    Suede and thick buildup

Flick the worst of the dried salt off with an old toothbrush before using any liquid. Shoe-repair shops also sell salt-stain removers.

  3. Then try

    On carpet

Vacuum up the loose salt. Spray the salty patches with a 1 to 1 mix of hot water and white vinegar until they are damp, not soaked, wait about 5 minutes and blot dry.

    Test a hidden spot first.
